However when it comes this Presario R3000, the disc boots fine the comp is making noise moving along nicely so it seems. After about two mins in stop working and the computer shuts down. So far I have double checked MD5sum. Tried installing with ethernet plugged in ( as mentioned in another post) It should be mentioned that currently there is a clean install of Win XP, but I was hoping to get a clean install of Natty instead of XP, but can't get to the menu to perform clean install. Also a screen had appeared just once, after the numerous attempts, of a black and white log page. Is there a way I can copy this log information as it may be of assistance to anyone willing to help me. If it's a Live CD, have you selected the 'Try Ubuntu without making changes to your computer' option, just to verify that it boots?
A couple more questions. Which model number is your Presario? From this (you may have to click on the 'Laptops/Tablets/Notebooks(48)' to find your laptop), there seem to be a lot of different 'R3000's. A bit further down, I mentioned that there might be BIOS updates available which will fix any issues you're having. So, you'll want to check the product information from this list. If you're using the LiveCD and you can boot to the Live CD portion (and use Ubuntu for a while), then I would suggest using an alternate installer to complete your install. You can find it.
I've had a few systems where it worked better to use the alternate install CD instead of the Live CD. At least in the older versions of Ubuntu, you had to install with the 'linux noapic' command. One other post that I found mentioned checking at Compaq (HP for now) for any BIOS updates that might fix some issues. Hope this helps you, and have a great day Patrick.
Quote: boot to the Live CD portion (and use Ubuntu for a while) I just upgraded bios (and confirmed through command msinfo32 for new bios version to be present), then tried every option for the live CD. Each time the computer crashes. I tried to use alternate CD but once again the computer shut down. Now the system shuts down regardless of loading bios, grub menus etc. After 20-30secs.
The only time the computer does not shut down is if i choose win xp os from grub menu within 20secs. Could this have anything to do with APIC? If so is there a way to disable or configure through win xp? Computer Info: Compaq Presario R3000Z CTO Notebook PC, AMD Athlon 3700+ processor, Window XP. Any other ideas?
I have a Presario 3045US (DC924A) that started out with xp and I upgraded to xp pro. About two years ago after a power supply fan quit.
I replaced the fan and added a gig of memory to it. At that point it became a test machine and has had Debian Lenny, Squeeze and Sid.
Have loaded Dream linux, Damn Small Linux, Centos server and Debian server with no problems. I will tell you that sometimes in between OS changes, I will wipe the hard drive as I have noticed that sometimes after repeated attemps at installing a OS, there have been something that has gone wrong.
Try wiping the hard drive and then install to see what it does. O, by the way, try a Debian install cd. Hi Patrick thanks for your thoughts and time. Unfortunately I can't even I just upgraded bios (and confirmed through command msinfo32 for new bios version to be present), then tried every option for the live CD. Each time the computer crashes. Thanks I would tend to agree with k3lt01 and etech3 about trying other distros. If you're determined to get Ubuntu running (or run into problems with the other distros as well), you can try the noapic option at boot on the live CD. When the computer starts booting, press F6 until you get a boot: prompt. Add 'noapic' (without quotes after the quiet splash option), and hit enter. I more or less found how to do this. (Note they just say add the noapic command. I usually put new options right after 'quiet splash' just to make sure they're added.

You can add them at the end of the line also). Hope this helps, and have a great day Patrick.
