Convert Fs9 Traffic Files To Fsx Sp2
Maybe this should be posted elsewhere, but yesterday I did a 4 hour VFR flight from Melb to Sydney then to Auckland. With Direct X 10 turned on. Game behaved fine, no craches, good frame rates, no stutters, landing at Sydney which can be a frame rate drian and cause stutters was far easier than every before in FSX. The following I suspect is MS own problem or a driver issue, Yellow taxi lines do not display all the time, the progressive taxi line if one needs to use it, flutters on and off. I also notice that when one first loads a flight, the clouds and afct textures are for a split second light blue. There is the difference to no Direct X 10 Interesting. So one hpes sp2 to come out around xmas fixes these minor bugs.

A running program isn't compatible.' Surely this should not happen? Conburt, you need to apply the Vista hotfix that can be downloaded from the link here: Vista Aero will still get disabled while FSX is running, but it is automatically re-enabled when you shut down FSX. The hotfix prevents the annoying message window from popping up every time you run FSX. Steve sut101.
OK guys, you can whinge all you like about the AI aircraft textures not working in DX10 mode, but it won't fix anything. I'd rather put the effort into trying to find a solution. Has anyone tried converting the UT AI Aircraft textures from their default DXT3 1024x1024 format to say, DXT1 or 32 bit??? Does this fix the 'white aircraft' problem with DX10??? Some AI aircraft do work, as you have all pointed out, so what are the fundamental differences between their textures/models and the UT aircraft models??? Anyone bothered to investigate? Is it the texture format, model reflections, what?

Is it the texture format, model reflections, what? Let me start off my saying that I do not have FSX and Vista, so I am not experiencing this.
There are major differences in AI models, the biggest difference is how they were created. There are two main programs used to create AI models, GMAX and FSDS, and who knows how many different versions of those two programs are out there.
The problem might lie within there somewhere and also keep in mind, that a majority of these models have been developed for FS2002 and FS2004. Also keep in mind that this is not affecting UT only. I have seen similar topics in the Project AI forums, and since there is (or was) a commonality between the UT models and some PAI models, that might explain why this issue is being reported on their site as well. I am wondering if some of the newer models work better. For example, if you have the PAI E135 installed and it is all white, does the AI Malcontent E135 show the livery or not. Or instead of the PAI/FSPainter A340s, how about the models from The Fruit Stand, do they show or are they all white?
Just some ramblings from a FS9 user who has no intentions whatsoever to install the FSX slideshow on my PC. Hi Sut101 Yes I thought of that, there is a tool in the sdk of the acceleration pack called Imagetool. I think it's on the DVD itself. But two issues, one is copyright of Flightone and two is exaclty which texture/s would one need to convert. If you look at the default textures of FSX acft or add on acft that will display correct with Direct X 10 turned on, they appear all to be DDS format, where non showing Acft textures mainly appear to be bitmap. I doubt it would be that simple, e.g to convert the files even if one knew which ones and if it was, still a lot of time envloved.
Now as Craig queries, Does the PAI ones show, well I don't have any and I tried to find the site where one gets them from the other day, but it would not load. Ciao PS Craig, FSX is no slidehow, it is worth it, if one has the system and especially video card to handle it, we will al have to by later 2008 if MS and Aces keep to their 2 year cycle of bringing out FS titles, as that I would be quite sure, be Direct X 10 full supported, Phil Taylor says on his blog that any future work Aces are doing is towards this, meaning no backward compatablility, Did this not happen when FS2000 came out, FS98 add ons would not work, I had some great FS98 scenery, could not use it in FS2000 and verions since. Nothing stays the same for ever as they say. I've now un-installed the acceleration pack completely until such times as the software developers get to grips with the changes it demands.
I honestly do not think we are going to see a truly Directx 10 compatible traffic programme until way into next year and may be not even then. There is an image converter programme which will convert bmp to dds and I did a quick try out but ended up with black aircraft which makes a change from white. I have been reading a lot of bloggs and forums and the general view is that people are not at all happy with what has happened over the past 12 months and are reverting to fs9. This is not good news for the simulation. As I have said previously the sim is not the same without some sort of traffic programme and I do not know of anyone running Flightsim without one installed. Microsoft need to realise this big time.
I've done some experiments in converting the UT textures to DXT1 and DDS but the 'white aircraft' remain in DX10 mode. Looks like it is an issue with the models themselves.
A possible partial work-around would be to reassign some of the UT AI aircraft to default FSX aircraft. At least they will display correctly in DX10 mode. Also, if any freeware AI models are available that work, then they could also be used as a substitute. Personally, I think I'll just forget about using DX10 mode for now, as the DX10 preview mode still has plenty of other graphics glitches.
FSX slideshow???? If I disable all add-ons and set all the display sliders to minimum, FSX runs at 160fps! Don't set your sliders unrealistically high, but also beware that some older sceneries seem to add to the frame rate problems, particularly anything that relies on old common object libraries such as RWY12, EZ Scenery, and the like. Yes reassigning acft in UT with add on's or the textires for default FSX acft does work, I have done this, but it is a big time consumption and finding afct for majoirty of airlines is not easy even with what one can download from flightsim and avsim. Major airlines fine, you can get those, but unless you get lucky some or a lot of regional airlines one can't find. AS for a AI traffic program we won't have to wait forever, as My Traffic has gotten to 60 to 70% working with Direct X 10 preview and they are working on the rest.
Just Flight Traffic, has one indevlopment called Traffic X as I have posted here about before I think. It can be done, but one has to patience as I belieave Traffic X is a total rebuild of their program and UT will have to be too. Interesting though that My Traffic are far more advanced, but downfall of that program, unlike UT and Traffic X I don't think their AI traffic do more than short flights or just circuits, although not seen enough of program to reall judge.
Plus their parking allocation is way off at some airports. We wait for devlopers to get up to date, but MS has not helped the issue and while there is a still disappaering taxi lines etc with Direct X 10, no way is it finished Anyway tried using the progressive taxi with Direct X 10 turned on, keeps disappering. Well done Aces or is this Nvidia Driver, who knows. Yes your write they are not Vista ready, not sure if they say they are, but to read one of the post at Just flight forum from the link you posed is hard to follow. Correct me if I am wrong, but the Sp2 Aces are realsing free sometime soon is the same as what was included with the Accerlation pack, in fact Phil Taylor of Aces says that on his blog. If the industry wants to wait for FS11 is there choice, but they are still going to have to adjust the programs for it or for the Direct X 10 preview, either way.
Maybe that is what the Preview is all about, to give devlopers a heads up as what is to come. As for my comment about flickering taxi lines etc, I downloaded some Beta drivers 169.12 from Nvidia and so far that problem seems fixed. There is some very useful information and comments about this whole FSX and Direct X 10 issue and other things at avsim forums.
I guess it is up to each devloper to decide which way they want to go. Time will tell.
I have had a good read of the DX10 features in the new SDK download thats just been released. The new SDK is a completly new system and comes in line with Microsofts GameBox, Microsoft has tried to implement some of these features in Flight SimulatorX, as a trial for their new FS11, this is where DirectX10 comes in. They have supplied a sample or trial of some DirectX 10 features in their recent Acceleration Pack for the purpose soley of giving developers the chance to make any necessary patches so their software is compatable with the new DirectX10 features, having said that, the features supplied with the directx10 in the acceleration pack is not entirley complete, which means there is more to come! This might explain the current DirectX10 situation! DirectX 10 Is the technology used or a type of language used for advanced Graphics and sounds SDK Software Developers Kit Are the tools to create the advanced graphics and sounds SP2 Service Pack 2 Is the Latest interface used in any program Flight simulator X (FS10) Has no DirectX 10 (Advanced Graphics or sounds) installed in it,other than some samples that were included in the Acceleration Pack. The Texture problem is to do with the new interface that Microsoft has produced in SP2, this has only affected a minority of software developers, as I understand it these developer used an old SDK (FS9 then converted it to FSX) to develop all their planes and scenery.
All those who used the SDK that was released at the same time as FSX are OK with SP2. Microsoft will be releasing a lot of DirectX10 in their new Flight Simulator FSX11.
