It’s not often but it does arise and many of you may have already gone through the process of a clean uninstall of SOLIDWORKS. This can be a solution to many problems that can occur in the life span of software, and no its not limited to just SOLIDWORKS. As you would have to replace certain components in a car after so many miles, you often have to do the same with Software and a clean uninstall/re-install is a good way to do a complete overhaul. The clean uninstall process involves a few more steps than your standard Windows uninstall, what I want to focus on is the preparation or backup that every user should do before moving into the clean uninstall process. So let us take a look at a few key steps. 1) Export or Rename registry key items During the clean uninstall process, the user will be deleting out registry keys. This can also be a means of troubleshooting issues in SOLIDWORKS if the software is showing abnormal behavior.

Whenever the registry key “HKEYCURRENTUSER/Software/SOLIDWORKS/SOLIDWORKS (2013)” is removed OR renamed, SOLIDWORKS will automatically regenerate those key settings. So before you go and start deleting out registry keys settings that will most likely have been modified by the user (Hotkeys, file locations, etc) its good practice to export or rename that key. To export, right click on the SOLIDWORKS folder and hit export (see image.

Alternatively, to rename add a suffix to the extension, ie: “SOLIDWORKS (2013) DATE,” “SOLIDWORKS (2013) OLD,” “SOLIDWORKSBADABING,” etc Both methods will work to generate a backup and one or the other is a MUST before continuing with the clean uninstall. 2) Copy Settings Wizard The next step that I HIGHLY recommend is similar to the last, but this time we will use the SOLIDWORKS Copy Settings Wizard to export out registry key settings that hold valuable and specific information regarding the users’ custom interface such as shortcuts, file locations, mouse gestures, color settings, templates, etc. These items are all stored in the registry and having a copy of these items is ideal for further implementation.

(It’s a good idea to do this after making any changes.) If you ever run into a system failure or you need to switch desktops, you can simply apply these settings from a network location or a thumb drive. You may not be able to e-mail these though, majority of Malware, Spyware, Antivirus software will not allow registry files to be transferred via e-mail, so stick with an external memory source. From the Windows Start, this can be found in ProgramsSOLIDWORKS (vers)SOLIDWORKS ToolsCopy Settings Wizard.

Simply walk through the prompts and save the reg file out to a safe location. After you have completed your clean uninstall, you can double click on this exported file to bring all your settings back in! 3) Template Locations During the clean uninstall you will go through and delete legacy SOLIDWORKS folders from the installation directory. One of these folders holds valuable information that you will be kicking yourself for deleting if you do! So make sure to create a copy of all your templates (Drawing, assembly and part) before deleting the folder. Even better is to create a new location/directory for all these templates to exist in and point SOLIDWORKS to that location!
