I enter a small, quiet village in the middle of Europe, sent to rescue the President’s daughter who was kidnapped by a mysterious cult. As soon as I arrive, the villagers make it clear that I’m not welcome.

I run into a nearby house for shelter, barricading the doors when I hear the sound of a chainsaw wielding maniac who wants to finish there and then. I hear some noise upstairs, only to discover it’s the sound of the windows breaking; these villagers are smart and are already preparing ladders to completely surround me. I’ve been playing for just 10 minutes and I’m already terrified.
Equipped with only a shotgun and a basic handgun, I know this isn’t going to be easy. All of this is so familiar, yet so exhilarating and new at the same time. I first experienced Resident Evil 4 almost a decade ago and replaying it now, it still holds up. It’s just that damn good. Resident Evil 4 was controversial when it first came out; it became a 3 rd person shooter, exclusive to the Nintendo Gamecube, unlike the previous games which featured awkward controls and a terrible camera on the original Playstation.

It was a huge change for the franchise but it was instantly revered as one of the greatest games of all time. Graphically, the game was a showcase for what the Gamecube could do and it still holds up visually today. From the eerie village to the huge castle interiors, Resident Evil 4 felt next gen in 2004 and it’s clear to see why. The frame rate is silky smooth, which is incredibly impressive given how open some of the levels are, whilst the atmosphere and music create a real sense of tension. Many old school Resident Evil fans were disappointed with the way Resident Evil 4 ditched the ‘survival horror’ roots of its predecessors and instead put more emphasis on the action, however replaying the game has shown me premature those comments are. Yes, the shock scare tactics and fixed camera angles are gone, but instead we have an over the shoulder camera that follows the player and expertly captures intense action.
The beautiful 2D backdrops have gone and instead we have beautiful 3D graphics, which were amongst the best of its generation. Best of all, this game feature real tension, building in the run-up and execution of the multitude of excellent set pieces and boss battles. The game is also peppered with quick time events, but unlike many games, they never felt intrusive. Yes, it’s not a true ‘Resident Evil’ but let’s be honest; it’s a much better game. After almost 15 hours, I finally sat through the credits of RE4 and it occurred to me just how special this game is. To me, it’s the gaming equivalent of the movie classic, Terminator 2; bigger, better and genre defining. Resident Evil 4 is the result of a team coming together and delivering on all of the potential they hold within them.
It’s a non-stop rollercoaster that’s been engineered to be as close to perfection as possible. By letting go of all past conventions, they have made the game that they wanted to make, and a game that you simply must play.
